The 20th edition of Planet in Focus International Environmental Film Festival happens from October 15th to 20th with screenings at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, Innis Deluxe Screening Room, Innis Town Hall and the Royal Cinema.

This year, Brazil will be represented with only one short film, Plantae, by Guilherme Gehr. The 2D animation will be screened on Thursday, Oct 17, at 6pm at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema (506 Bloor St. W), with the American documentary Mossville.

In a very current topic, the 2D animation envisions a call for rainforest protection. When cutting a large tree deep inside the forest, a logger contemplates an unexpected reaction of nature.

Plantae is an impressive animation where sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s a real image or not. Its message is strong and it resonates on your mind for a while.

Guilherme Gehr

Guilherme was born in Santa Catarina State, South of Brazil, where he got a bachelor’s degree in Cinema and Video at UNISUL, Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina, having done a lot of work in painting and drawing and, mainly, set designs, as well as art direction. Being a designer by passion, at the end of the course he turned his attention to animation.

His themes and aesthetics, both in cinematographic work and in the plastic arts, have always followed a worldview in which nature provides us with the meaning of all things, and he tries, whenever possible, to exalt its beauty, its connections, its savagery and its grace.
