The Christmas market of the historic Distillery District, now in its eighth year, recreates the magic and romance of traditional European markets dating back to the early 1300s. The Toronto Christmas Market, from November 16 to December 23, features European food delicacies, exclusive gift items from around the world and loads of entertainment. In addition, the market offers heated or cold beer, wine gardens, a tree over 50 feet tall with over 40 thousand lights and of course, Santa and his elves!

In the entertainment section, there are over 450 free performances on the main stage that include award-winning singers, brass bands, cultural dancers, and carolers.

It started in Germany

The first known Christmas market or “Weihnachtsmarkt” happened back in 1384 in Bautzen, Germany. In the city of Dresden, the first was in 1434; in Frankfurt, it was in 1393; in Munich, it was in 1310 and Augsburg in 1498.
