For the first time in her career, writer Djamila Ribeiro will take part in a literary event in Canada. The author has been confirmed as one of the featured guests at the Blue Metropolis, held in the city of Montreal. Djamila will deliver two presentations on April 25 and 26, in both English and Portuguese.
The writer brings a sharp and necessary perspective to one of the defining questions of our time: who has the right to speak, and under what conditions? Drawing on her influential concept of place of speech—a socially grounded position from which speech is produced and recognized—Ribeiro reframes public discourse as a space structured by inequality, history, and power.
The talks will take place at Hotel 10, in the Espace Godin, and will be moderated by Ingrid Bejerman. Following the event, there will be a book signing session at the festival’s official bookstore.

About Djamila Ribeiro
Djamila Taís Ribeiro dos Santos is a professor, philosopher, writer, and Black movement activist in Brazil. Internationally recognized, she has a strong presence on social media and in major publications such as Folha de S.Paulo and CartaCapital. In 2023, she was awarded the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and, in the same year, became the first Brazilian to speak at the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade at the United Nations General Assembly.
She was also included in the BBC’s list of the 100 most influential and inspiring women in the world. Since 2022, she has held seat number 28 at the Academia Paulista de Letras.
